During the last week of school, five Iowa-Grant 5th-grade students were acknowledged for their excellence in the classroom. Brantlee H., George L., Connor G., Hannah N.. and Ezzy W. were awarded the Summers Award for being in the top 10% of their class. Great job! Keep up the amazing work. To learn about the history of the Elizabeth Summers bequest, continue reading below.
Elizabeth Summers (1918 – 2008) was born in Fennimore, Wisconsin to a
farming family. Her parents, John & Rose Kalile, had emigrated from the country of
Lebanon. Elizabeth met her husband, Norbert Summers, in La Crosse. She worked as a
secretary & receptionist at a business in La Crosse for 34 years. Her older twin sisters
Josephine and Genevieve Kalile attended the Platteville Normal School and were rural
school teachers in the Iowa & Grant counties. Since neither Josephine nor Genevieve had
married, they left their inheritance to Elizabeth. When Elizabeth died, her Trust (est. 2010)
made gifts totaling over $1.1 million. In addition to the Iowa-Grant bequest, the Summers trust made gifts to several other public schools plus, among others, the Boscobel
Health Care Foundation, Fennimore Community Scholarship Foundation, Great Rivers
United Way, UW-Platteville Foundation, and Caritas Lebanon Catholic Charity. This
bequest continues to fund the Iowa-Grant top 10% of the fifth-grade class for their
achievements for now & years to come.

Thank you, PTC for providing IGEMS with Bounce Houses for gym class last Thursday. The students had a great time.

Our 5th and 6th graders had the wonderful opportunity to work with the UW-Madison Extension Office on various dates in April and May with mental health presentations. There was a series that introduced mental health and well-being to our students. Some of the topics covered were stress, handling anger, and self-talk. We appreciated the activities Dan Brandt led with students.

Good luck at State Bret!
